The Retreat of Mountain Glaciers since the Little Ice Age: A Spatially Explicit Database

نویسندگان

چکیده

Most of the world’s mountain glaciers have been retreating for more than a century in response to climate change. Glacier retreat is evident on all continents, and rate has accelerated during recent decades. Accurate, spatially explicit information position glacier margins over time useful analyzing patterns measuring reductions surface area. This also essential evaluating how ecosystems are evolving due warming attendant retreat. Here, we present non-comprehensive dataset showing multiple positions fronts since Little Ice Age (LIA) maxima, including many data from pre-satellite era. The based historical archival records topographical maps; repeated photographs, paintings, aerial or satellite images with supplement geochronology; own field data. We provide ESRI shapefiles 728 past 94 except Antarctica, covering period between maxima present. On average, series span 190 years. From 2 46 per depicted (on average: 7.8).

Ice Cores , High - Mountain Glaciers , and Climate

The near-global retreat of high-mountain glaciers and the shrinkage of ice fields and ice caps and retreat of their associated outlet glaciers are perhaps the most visible evidence for 20th-century climate change and the recent increase in the globally averaged near-surface temperatures of the Earth’s surface. The loss of high-mountain glaciers—including ice fields, ice caps, and other glaciers...

Evidence for external forcing of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation since termination of the Little Ice Age

The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) represents a significant driver of Northern Hemisphere climate, but the forcing mechanisms pacing the AMO remain poorly understood. Here we use the available proxy records to investigate the influence of solar and volcanic forcing on the AMO over the last ~450 years. The evidence suggests that external forcing played a dominant role in pacing the AMO ...

Nutrient utilisation and weathering inputs in the Peruvian upwelling region since the Little Ice Age

For this study two sediment cores from the Peruvian shelf covering the time period between the Little Ice Age (LIA) and present were examined for changes in productivity (biogenic opal concentrations (bSi)), nutrient utilisation (stable isotope compositions of silicon (δSiopal) and nitrogen (δNsed)), as well as in ocean circulation and material transport (authigenic and detrital radiogenic neod...
